Competence Centre for 3D-Modelling, Rapid Prototyping and Presentation

At its new interdisciplinary Competence Centre for 3D-Modelling, Rapid Prototyping and Presentation, the Institute of Research in Applied Arts is building on findings and experience gained in a research project titled Investigation of Art and Design Issues in the Relationships between Objects, Images and Space Using Information Technology and Rapid Prototyping, which was initiated and headed by institute faculty member Prof. Reiner Nachtwey from the Digital Illustration and Animation Laboratory. The Competence Centre also benefits from much valuable experience gained in long years of collaboration with the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, in particular in the planning and execution of courses in rapid prototyping, product development and projects with third-party funding.

The focuses of the research and development work at the Competence Centre include the production of new objects from data generated with experimental digital imaging processes, modelling the data with rapid prototyping processes and presentation – for example in videos, exhibitions, publications and so on. The processes involved in the production of the objects are given just as much attention as the objects themselves.
